Meta is an administrative department in central-eastern Colombia. Its capital, Villavicencio, serves as the principal urban and commercial center linking the Andean highlands with the vast lowland plains. The department is best known for its extensive savannas, river networks and role as a gateway to Colombia’s eastern Llanos.
Geography
Meta combines lowland plains and the western foothills of the Eastern Andes. The Meta River, one of the region’s major waterways, crosses the department and forms part of the Orinoco basin. Landscapes range from open grasslands and wetlands to gallery forest along rivers and isolated mountain outcrops that rise from the plains.
Climate and ecosystems
The climate is predominantly tropical with marked wet and dry seasons typical of the Llanos. Soils and hydrology create habitats for wildlife adapted to seasonal flooding, and pockets of higher ground support forested areas. Portions of the department include protected areas and striking natural sites that attract nature-oriented visitors.
Economy and uses
Traditional economic activities include cattle ranching and broadacre agriculture. In recent decades extractive industries, particularly oil and gas, have become important where resources are present. Ecotourism and recreation around rivers, natural falls and culturally significant sites add growing economic value.
History and culture
The territory was inhabited for millennia by indigenous communities before Spanish colonization and later Mestizo settlement. A distinct Llanero culture developed around cattle work and life on the plains; festivals, music and cuisine reflect that heritage. Villavicencio has grown as the administrative and logistical hub connecting plains and highland regions.
Administration, transport and notable places
Meta is divided into municipalities administered from its capital and other local centers. Road and air links connect Villavicencio and the department to Bogotá and regional markets; river transport remains important for remote areas. Notable attractions include colorful riverine formations and protected landscapes that highlight the department’s natural diversity.
