Airbus CC-150 Polaris — Royal Canadian Air Force transport and tanker

Canadian military version of the Airbus A310 adapted for strategic transport, VIP missions, aeromedical evacuation and air-to-air refuelling; operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Overview

The Airbus CC-150 Polaris is the Royal Canadian Air Force designation for a multi-role transport aircraft based on the Airbus A310. Procured to provide long-range strategic airlift and VIP transport, the type has also been fitted for aeromedical evacuation and aerial refuelling tasks. The Polaris combines a commercial widebody airframe with military mission equipment to meet Canada’s strategic mobility needs.

Design and variants

Derived from the commercial A310 platform and related to the Airbus A310 MRTT family, the CC-150 fleet includes both passenger-configured and tanker-capable examples. Modifications for military service typically involve reinforced floors, military communications and avionics, pallet-handling provisions, and add-on refuelling pods or plumbing for hose-and-drogue refuelling when required. In Canadian service the tanker-upgraded aircraft are often identified with an additional type suffix.

Roles and capabilities

  • Strategic transport of personnel and equipment across intercontinental distances.
  • VIP transport for national leaders and dignitaries, including specially configured cabin interiors.
  • Aeromedical evacuation and humanitarian relief missions, using rapid reconfiguration for stretchers and medical teams.
  • Air-to-air refuelling of allied fighters and other aircraft using hose-and-drogue systems.

Operational history

The Polaris entered Canadian service after acquisition of the A310 airframe family to replace older strategic transport types. Over time the aircraft have been reconfigured and modernized to extend service life and add tanker capability. They have supported domestic and international operations, ranging from government airlift and disaster relief to routine logistical support for overseas deployments.

Notable facts and distinctions

Although built on a civilian design, the CC-150 demonstrates how widebody airliners can be adapted for versatile military missions without developing a completely new airframe. The combination of VIP, transport, medevac and refuelling roles in a single type makes it a flexible asset for a country with dispersed territory and expeditionary commitments. The Polaris continues to bridge the gap between strategic lift requirements and available platforms in Canadian service.
