Structure and membership

Membership in the CJHL consists of several regional leagues, each organized around a province or group of provinces. Member leagues operate individual teams that follow common eligibility rules and season formats. The CJHL provides governance guidance, organizes interleague play, and sanctions the national championship pathway. History and development

The CJHL was formed in November 1993 as a successor to earlier regional associations, created to improve coordination and promote the interests of Junior A hockey nationwide. Since its founding it has worked to standardize competition rules, expand opportunities for players, and increase the visibility of Junior A as a developmental route.

Role and significance

Junior A hockey plays an important role in developing young players, many of whom move on to university hockey programs, scholarships, and professional careers. The CJHL administers the national championship pathway and supports player education, safety protocols, and scouting exposure. Community engagement and local fan support are central to the identity of CJHL clubs.
