Ahmad Latifovich Alasgarov was a prominent figure in Azerbaijani football who combined a playing career as a defender with a long tenure as a coach. He is known by his Azerbaijani name Əhməd Lətif oğlu Ələsgərov and his Russian name Ахмед Лятифович Алескеров. As a Azerbaijani footballer turned manager, his work spanned the late Soviet era into the post-Soviet period.

Overview

Born on 5 October 1935 in Baku, Alasgarov played as a defender from about 1955 to 1965. After retiring from playing he took up coaching and went on to manage nine different teams between 1966 and 2006, including a spell in charge of the Azerbaijan national football team. He died after a prolonged illness on 19 May 2015 in Odessa, Ukraine, at the age of 79.

Playing career and style

Alasgarov’s playing career was spent during a period when Azerbaijani clubs and players competed within the Soviet football system. As a defender he was responsible for organizing the back line, marking opponents and helping to build play from the rear—roles typical for defenders of that era. Contemporary accounts and the trajectory of his later coaching work suggest he valued tactical discipline and physical preparation.

Coaching career and influence

Transitioning to management in the mid-1960s, Alasgarov coached a succession of clubs and teams for four decades. His managerial span—from 1966 through 2006—covered both club duties and national-team responsibilities. He is remembered for contributing to the development of players and for navigating the changing structures of football after the dissolution of the USSR, when newly independent nations like Azerbaijan had to rebuild domestic competitions and coaching paths.
