Artur Manuel Soares Correia (18 April 1950 – 25 July 2016) was a Portuguese professional footballer who played principally as a right back. Commonly known by the nickname "Ruço", he is remembered for his steady defensive play and key role during a successful period at S.L. Benfica. Over 12 seasons in the Portuguese top flight he accumulated notable Primeira Liga totals, featuring for clubs including Associação Académica de Coimbra, Benfica and Sporting CP.
Club career
Correia began his senior career with Académica de Coimbra, where his performances brought him to national attention and led to a move to one of Portugal’s biggest clubs. At Benfica he became part of a team that dominated domestic football for several seasons, winning multiple league titles and cup competitions. Later he played for Sporting CP before completing a spell abroad with the New England Tea Men in the United States. His professional club career combined domestic success with experience in the North American Soccer League, a path followed by several European players of his generation.
