Zuidplas is a municipality in the Netherlands, situated within the province of South Holland. It was created on 1 January 2010 by merging the former municipalities of Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen-Moerkapelle. The area is primarily low-lying polder land and in 2019 the municipality had approximately 42,762 inhabitants.
Characteristics
Zuidplas combines village centres, agricultural land and engineered waterways. The landscape is shaped by reclamation, drainage and dikes; many fields, canals and small lakes are managed to control water levels. Settlement patterns include compact villages and commuter residential areas for nearby cities.
History and administration
The modern municipality of Zuidplas resulted from a municipal reorganisation intended to improve local services and coordination of spatial planning. Its municipal council and administration manage local infrastructure, environmental planning and community services for the constituent towns and hamlets.
Landscape and notable facts
Zuidplas is known for its polder environment and intensive water management practices typical of western Dutch provinces. It contains one of the lowest land points in the country, several metres below sea level, reflecting long-standing Dutch expertise in drainage and flood control. Wetland margins, canals and pocket nature areas provide ecological diversity within a working agricultural landscape.
Economy, transport and recreation
The local economy mixes agriculture and horticulture with small businesses and services. Many residents commute to larger urban centres, aided by regional roads and public transport links that connect to nearby cities. The municipality offers recreational cycling and walking routes, waterside leisure, and local community events that reflect village traditions.
