Steven Van Zandt (born Steven Lento, November 22, 1950) is an American musician and actor whose work spans rock performance, political activism, broadcasting and acting. Commonly known by the stage name Little Steven (and sometimes as Miami Steve), he is best known as a long‑time member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band where he plays electric guitar and occasionally mandolin. He has led his own ensemble, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, and pursued solo recording and production projects alongside his band work.
Early life
Van Zandt was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, and raised in Middletown Township, New Jersey. He is of Italian ancestry and grew up immersed in the local New Jersey music scene. His early exposure to rhythm and blues, rock and soul shaped the musical direction he would follow as a performer and bandleader.
Musical career
Van Zandt emerged as a significant figure in the New Jersey rock community in the late 1960s and 1970s. As a collaborator with Springsteen he contributed to the sound and arrangements of the E Street Band, and at the same time developed his own identity through solo records and the Disciples of Soul. His solo work blends rock, R&B and soul influences and often incorporates socially conscious themes.
- Performance: long association with the E Street Band and extensive touring with his own groups.
- Recording and production: solo albums, session work, and production for other artists.
- Curatorial projects: compilation albums and efforts to preserve and promote garage and classic rock styles.
Activism and organizing
Van Zandt has combined his musical career with political engagement. In the 1980s he helped organize musicians and recording projects to raise awareness of international issues, using collaborative songs and public campaigns to draw attention to injustice. His activism has been a recurring feature of his public life and has influenced many of the benefit projects and public statements he has supported.
Broadcasting and promotion
Beyond performing and recording, Van Zandt has been active in broadcasting as a promoter of garage‑influenced rock and roots music. He hosts the radio program Little Steven's Underground Garage, which highlights both historical recordings and contemporary artists in a similar tradition. The show and related events have helped introduce new audiences to overlooked styles and connect them with classic rock influences.
Acting career
Van Zandt has established a parallel career as an actor. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Silvio Dante on the HBO drama The Sopranos (1999–2007), a role that brought him acclaim for playing a complex, long‑running supporting character. Later he starred as Frank Tagliano / Giovanni "Johnny" Henriksen in the Norway‑based series Lilyhammer (2012–2014), a show that mixed crime drama with comedic, cross‑cultural elements.
Recognition and influence
Van Zandt's multifaceted career has earned recognition within the music community. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of the E Street Band. He is often cited for his distinctive stage presence, trademark bandanna and his efforts to preserve and celebrate roots of rock and rhythm and blues.
Personal life
Van Zandt married Maureen Santoro in 1982. He has maintained a public profile that balances his artistic work with periods of privacy; he remains active in music, media and public events while continuing to perform with the E Street Band and in his own projects.
Van Zandt's career is notable for its variety: a working sideman and band member within one of rock's best‑known ensembles, a solo artist with political commitments, an actor with memorable television roles, and a broadcaster and curator who champions underground and classic rock traditions. His wide range of activities has made him a distinctive and enduring figure in American popular culture.
