Class 323 are three-car electric multiple units manufactured by Hunslet TPL between 1992 and 1996. A total of 43 sets were constructed to operate inner-suburban passenger services originally for British Rail, serving suburban networks in and around Birmingham and Manchester.
Design and purpose
These units were built specifically for short-distance commuter routes, with a formation intended to provide frequent stops and rapid acceleration. The three-car layout was chosen to match demand on inner-city corridors where high service frequency and quick boarding were priorities.
Production and manufacturer
Hunslet TPL produced the complete batch of 43 units during the early 1990s. The Class 323s were among the final rail vehicles completed by the company; production ceased as the manufacturer encountered severe financial difficulties and subsequently failed.
Service role
- Primary use: inner-suburban commuter services
- Geographic focus: networks serving Birmingham and Manchester
- Set formation: three cars per unit
Over time these units became a familiar sight on short-distance urban services where their configuration matched operational needs. They were introduced to modernize and standardize rolling stock on busy metropolitan routes during the 1990s.
