Club career

Bakota began his senior career in his homeland with NK Zagreb, where he established himself as a reliable attacking player. In the later stages of the 1970s he moved abroad and became a prominent figure at SK Sturm Graz. During his time with Sturm Graz he was regarded as a key performer and one of the notable foreign players in the Austrian league of that era. His club career spanned roughly from 1971 to 1986, during which he adapted from an attacking midfielder role into leading the line when required.

International career

On the international stage Bakota earned recognition with the Yugoslavia national team, making an appearance in 1978. While his international cap tally was limited, selection for the national side reflected his strong form at club level and his status among the better players from the Yugoslav leagues at the time.

Bakota was noted for versatility: able to play behind the striker or as a centre-forward, he combined positional intelligence with heading ability and a direct approach to goal.
