Ali Khalif Galaydh (Somali: Cali Khalif Galaydh; Arabic: علي خليف غلير) was a Somali political leader and elder statesman best known for serving as Prime Minister of Somalia from October 2000 to October 2001. Born in Las Anod in 1941, Galaydh played recurring roles in national and regional politics, including membership in the Somali Federal Parliament in the post-2012 era and leadership within the northern regional movement commonly called Khatumo State.

Early life and background

Galaydh came from the Sool region of northern Somalia and belonged to a generation of politicians who combined local influence with experience in national institutions. He received part of his education outside Somalia and entered public life during periods of intense transition in Somali politics. His background as a regional leader helped make him a bridge figure between clan constituencies and state institutions.

Political career and offices

Galaydh's most prominent national post was as prime minister of the Transitional National Government at the turn of the 21st century. In that role he led a cabinet during a difficult post-conflict reconstruction period and participated in negotiations aimed at rebuilding central governance. After the formation of the Federal Government of Somalia, he was elected to the federal parliament in 2012 and continued to serve as a legislator and advisor on governance matters.

Role in regional politics

Beyond Mogadishu politics, Galaydh was a leading figure in the movement that sought an autonomous administration for the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn areas. Often described in news accounts as associated with Khatumo State, he worked to articulate local demands for representation, resources and security while also engaging with neighboring regional authorities. His standing in the region made him an important interlocutor in inter-regional talks.

Legacy and death

Observers of Somali politics remembered Galaydh as a pragmatic politician and negotiator who combined national experience with regional clout. He continued to sit in the federal legislature until his final months. Ali Khalif Galaydh died on October 8, 2020 in a hospital in Jigjiga, Ethiopia, after contracting COVID-19. His passing prompted condolences from colleagues across Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, and marked the loss of a prominent voice in efforts to reconcile clan-based interests with national institutions.
