James Owen Sullivan, widely known by his stage name The Rev, was an American musician and songwriter born on February 9 1981. He rose to prominence as a co‑founder and the long‑time drummer of the Avenged Sevenfold ensemble, a band associated with contemporary heavy metal. Sullivan's energetic playing, compositional contributions and onstage personality made him one of the most recognizable drummers in his scene.

Early life and musical beginnings

Sullivan was raised in Huntington Beach, California, where he began playing drums as a child. His early musical experiences included participation in local groups and a brief stint with the third‑wave ska outfit Suburban Legends. These formative years exposed him to diverse styles and informed the versatility he later showed in rock and metal contexts.

Career and roles

As a founding member of Avenged Sevenfold, Sullivan served primarily as drummer but also contributed backing and occasional lead vocals, songwriting ideas, and keyboard parts. He took an active creative role in both the studio and on tour. Outside the band he co‑fronted the side project Pinkly Smooth with guitarist Synyster Gates, in which he sang lead and played piano, demonstrating a range beyond percussion.

  • Primary role: drummer and percussionist for Avenged Sevenfold.
  • Additional roles: vocalist, pianist and songwriter in side projects.
  • Collaborations: worked closely with bandmates on arrangements and production choices.

Style and influence

Sullivan's drumming combined technical proficiency with a flair for theatrical fills and rhythmic variety. He blended elements of punk, metal and more melodic rock approaches, often shifting dynamics to serve a song's structure. After his death, musicians and fans noted his influence on a younger generation of drummers within the metal and hard rock communities.

Death and aftermath

On the morning of December 28 2009, Sullivan was found deceased at his home. An official examination and toxicology testing determined that his death involved an overdose of multiple substances, including Oxycodone, oxymorphone, diazepam, nordiazepam and alcohol. The coroner also noted that an enlarged heart may have been a contributing factor. The band and community held memorials and tributes; Avenged Sevenfold went on to complete and release the album that included his recorded contributions.

Sullivan's final recorded work with Avenged Sevenfold appeared posthumously on the album released after his death, serving as a reminder of his role in shaping the band's sound. He is remembered both for his technical skill and for the creative energy he brought to collaborative songwriting and performance.
