Overview
Teemu Ilmari Selänne (born 3 July 1970) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player known worldwide as the "Finnish Flash." He made his name as a fast, goal-producing right winger in top-level National Hockey League competition, and began his career in Finland before moving to North America to play a total of 21 NHL seasons. Over his career he skated for the original Winnipeg club, the long-time franchise in Anaheim, and later short stints with other NHL teams, earning a reputation for scoring and longevity in the sport of ice hockey.
NHL career and milestones
Selänne burst onto the NHL scene with an extraordinary rookie campaign, immediately establishing himself as one of the league's most dangerous scorers. He set or matched several team and league marks for rookie scoring and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year. His club career included extended, influential service with the Anaheim Ducks, and later shorter spells with the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. Selänne helped Anaheim to its first Stanley Cup title in 2007 and remained a prominent scorer and leader for many seasons thereafter.
International play
Representing Finland at major international tournaments, Selänne was a frequent presence on the national team. He was part of the Finnish squad that won bronze at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, captured a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics held in Turin, Italy, and earned another Olympic bronze at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. His international contributions extended beyond the Olympics to world championships and other tournaments, where he often served as a scoring leader and veteran presence.
Playing style and characteristics
Selänne combined explosive skating speed with a natural scoring touch. He was effective on the power play and at even strength, using quick releases and smart net-front positioning to convert chances. Coaches and teammates praised his work ethic, hockey sense, and ability to adapt his game as he aged, transitioning from a breakaway threat to a veteran finisher and mentor in locker rooms.
Records, honors and legacy
By the time he retired, Selänne ranked among the NHL's all-time leaders in goals and points and remained the highest-scoring Finnish player in league history. He held numerous franchise records for both his original Winnipeg/Anaheim affiliations and for the Ducks in particular. After retirement he was honored with induction into hockey halls of fame and is frequently cited as one of the most influential European forwards to succeed in the NHL.
