Overview
Ronald E. "Ron" Glass was an American actor whose career spanned stage, television, film and voice work. Born in 1945, he became widely recognized for two signature parts: the affable Det. Ron Harris on the ensemble sitcom Barney Miller and the thoughtful Shepherd Derrial Book on the cult science-fiction series Firefly, later reprised in the motion picture Serenity. His performances combined dry wit, warmth and a calm authority.
Early life and background
Glass was born in Evansville, Indiana, the son of Lethia and Crump Glass. He began his working life in performance through stage productions and small-screen appearances, developing the versatility that would mark his later career. Early stage experience and character work helped him move between comedic and dramatic roles throughout his life; he is often described as a classically trained performer with a strong sense of timing and presence (Evansville is where his life began).
Career highlights
Glass achieved national prominence in the 1970s and 1980s. On Barney Miller (1975–1982) he played Detective Ron Harris, bringing humor and pathos to a city-police ensemble. Decades later he found a new, fervent audience as Shepherd Book on Firefly, a role that showcased his ability to convey depth with economy. Beyond those parts, Glass worked steadily in guest television roles, feature films and voice acting, building a body of work noted for its reliability and range. He also made appearances on stage and in regional theater companies throughout his career (stage and screen).
