Overview

Richard Percival Lister, often published as R. P. Lister, was an English polymath whose work spanned literature, art and metallurgy. Born in 1914 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL), Lister produced novels, biographies, poetry and translations while maintaining a professional connection to the metals industry. His name appears on books such as The Idle Demon, The Rhyme and the Reason, Genghis Khan and The Travels of Herodotus.

Life and career

Lister was born in Nottingham in Nottinghamshire on 23 November 1914. He served in several roles over a long life, including a post in liaison for the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association from 1947 to 1949. He lived into advanced age and died of natural causes in London on 1 May 2014 at 99. He was married twice during his life.

Writing, themes and style

As a historian-minded writer, Lister moved comfortably between genres: fiction, biography, poetic essays and travel-related prose. He is often credited for clear, economical prose combined with a wry sensibility in his poetry and short fiction. His work includes popular treatments of historical figures and events as well as reflective pieces on language and form.

Art, poetry and science

Lister also worked as an artist and poet, producing visual and lyrical work that complemented his prose. Professionally he was a metallurgist by training and maintained links to industrial research. Between these interests he demonstrated an uncommon interdisciplinary outlook, writing for readers interested in both humanities and technical subjects.

Recognition and legacy

Lister's election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature recognized his contribution to British letters. He remains notable as an author who bridged scientific and literary communities, and his books continue to be cited for their accessible treatment of historical and cultural topics. Contemporary readers encounter him through reprints, anthologies and references in surveys of twentieth-century British literary figures.
