Overview

Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg (born June 5, 1971) is an American actor and producer who has worked extensively in both television and film. He was raised in the Boston area and comes from a mixed European background: his father was of Swedish and Irish descent while his mother has Scottish, English and French-Canadian roots. Over the course of his career Wahlberg has received critical recognition, including an Academy Award nomination.

Early life and music

Before his film work, Wahlberg became known in the 1990s as a performer under the name "Marky Mark." He was the frontman for Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and rose to prominence as a rap musician and model. Earlier in his teens he had a brief association with New Kids on the Block, but he soon moved on to build a separate public profile in music so as to transition into acting.

Acting career

Wahlberg successfully reinvented himself as a dramatic and commercial actor. He earned praise for performances in films such as Boogie Nights and The Fighter, and appeared in a wide range of genres—from crime dramas to action and comedy. Notable titles include The Departed, The Italian Job, Ted, Pain & Gain, Lone Survivor, Transformers: Age of Extinction and others. Critics and audiences have noted his ability to play both sympathetic and morally ambiguous characters, and his work with acclaimed filmmakers helped cement his standing in Hollywood.

Producing, business and media

Alongside acting, Wahlberg has developed a substantial career as a producer, serving as an executive producer on television series and films and launching projects that reflect his interests. He has been involved in restaurant and branded ventures, most visibly as a partner in the Wahlburgers chain, and in reality and documentary-style television tied to those businesses. His production activities extend to developing scripted series and films.

Personal life, controversies and public image

Wahlberg's early life included legal troubles: as a teenager he was convicted of assault and served time in juvenile detention. In later years he has spoken about his Catholic faith and family life, and he has supported charitable causes through foundations and benefit work. His career is often cited as an example of public reinvention—from musician and troubled youth to a broadly recognized actor and producer.
