This article provides a concise reference to important streams and rivers within Ethiopia. It groups waterways by the major drainage systems that shape the country's hydrology and offers an alphabetical listing of notable rivers.
Overview
Ethiopia's river network drains in several directions: northwest toward the Nile system, southeast toward the Indian Ocean via Somali rivers, south into Lake Turkana, and into interior basins that terminate in lakes or saline depressions. Many rivers originate in the Ethiopian Highlands; some flow year-round, while others are seasonal and depend on the rainy season.
Rivers by drainage basin
- Nile basin
- Blue Nile (Abay) — rises at Lake Tana and is the major highland contributor to the Nile system.
- Didessa — a significant tributary of the Blue Nile draining the western highlands.
- Beles — an outlet from Lake Tana that joins the Blue Nile system.
- Tekezé — originates in the northern highlands and flows toward Sudan, forming part of the Atbarah/Tekeze sub-basin that joins the Nile.
- Baro — a western Ethiopian river that contributes to the Sobat and ultimately to the White Nile.
- Rivers flowing toward the Indian Ocean (Somali drainage)
- Genale (also called Ganale) — a major river of the southeast that combines with other streams to form the Jubba (Juba) which reaches the Indian Ocean in Somalia.
- Dawa — rises near the Ethiopia–Kenya border and is a tributary to the Jubba system.
- Wabe Shebelle (Shebelle) — flows southeast from the highlands into Somalia; in many years its lower reaches dissipate into seasonal swamps before reaching the sea.
- Rift and closed basins
- Awash — runs eastward into the Afar Depression and terminates in a series of saline lakes and swamps rather than the ocean.
- Omo — drains the southwestern highlands into Lake Turkana (in Kenya); it carries sediment and seasonal floodwaters from a large catchment.
- Gibe — an important tributary of the Omo system, arising in the central highlands.
- Border and seasonal rivers
- Mareb (also called Gash) — runs in the north and serves as a cross-border/seasonal river along parts of the Eritrea–Ethiopia frontier.
