Afonso Dhlakama — Mozambican rebel leader and opposition politician

Early life and rise to leadership

Dhlakama was born in Muxúngue in Sofala Province and came of age during the turbulent years after Portuguese rule ended. He emerged within RENAMO's ranks and became its leader in 1979. Under his command the movement challenged the ruling FRELIMO party throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s.
