Overview
Juris Ekmanis (2 December 1941 – 9 April 2016) was a Latvian physicist and educator known for his work in physical energetics and for leadership in Latvian scientific institutions. He combined a long academic career with international collaboration and later took on senior administrative roles, most notably as President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
Academic career and appointments
Ekmanis began his scientific career at the Riga Polytechnical Institute, where he held a research post beginning in 1961 and was appointed professor in the mid-1980s. Over several decades he taught, supervised students and ran research projects that connected laboratory work to applied problems in energy processes and thermal systems.
- Junior Research Associate and later faculty at Riga Polytechnical Institute (1961–1994).
- Director of the Institute of the Physical Energetics at the Latvian Academy of Sciences from 1990.
- President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (2004–2012), guiding policy and institutional development.
Visiting positions and international work
Throughout his career Ekmanis spent time at several North American and British universities as a visiting scholar, which helped strengthen international links for Latvian science. Notable short-term appointments included visiting roles at Cornell University in Ithaca, at Iowa State University in Ames, and at the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. In 1976 he was a visiting scientist at McGill University in Montreal, and he also held a visiting professorship at the University of Manchester in 1993.
Research focus and impact
Ekmanis's work centered on physical energetics — the study of energy conversion, heat transfer and related processes — connecting theoretical physics and engineering practice. While his publications ranged across experimental and applied topics, an important aspect of his career was building capacity: mentoring younger researchers, developing laboratory facilities and promoting collaborative projects that linked Latvian teams with foreign universities and research centres.
Leadership and legacy
As Director of the Institute of the Physical Energetics and later as President of the national academy, Ekmanis played a visible role in shaping research priorities and representing Latvian science internationally. Colleagues remember him for fostering professional networks, advocating for science policy, and supporting the next generation of scientists during a period of institutional change in Latvia.
Death
Juris Ekmanis died on 9 April 2016 in Riga from complications following a stroke. His career included many international contacts and appointments that are often cited when summarizing the modern development of Latvian scientific institutions, including visits to institutions such as Cornell University, Iowa State University, UC Berkeley and McGill.
