In late February 2021 Magufuli's absence from public view fuelled speculation about his health. Reports from regional media suggested he was seriously ill; on 17 March 2021 Tanzanian authorities announced his death at a hospital in Dar es Salaam. The government stated the cause as heart failure. International observers and many foreign media outlets noted that details remained contested and that his death came amid ongoing concerns about the country's pandemic reporting policies.
