John Forzani (April 5, 1947 – October 31, 2014) was a Canadian businessman and former professional football player. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he combined a sporting career with later success in retail, building one of Canada’s leading chains of sporting goods stores and remaining a prominent figure in the country’s athletic and business communities until his death in Palm Springs, California.

Early life and football career

Forzani came to public attention as a lineman in the Canadian Football League. He joined the Calgary Stampeders in 1971 and was a member of the club that won the 59th Grey Cup that same year. He played professionally through the mid‑1970s, retiring from the field in 1976. During and after his playing days he remained connected to football and to his hometown’s sporting scene.

Business career and the Forzani Group

In the 1970s Forzani shifted into retail. He co‑founded the Forzani Group, which grew into a national network of sporting goods retailers operating multiple store banners and becoming a major supplier of athletic equipment and apparel across Canada. Forzani served as chairman and helped oversee expansion, merchandising and brand development. The company later became part of a larger Canadian retail consolidation when it was acquired by a national firm in 2011.

Legacy and later life

Beyond his commercial achievements, Forzani is remembered for bridging professional sport and commerce at a time when Canadian sports retail was evolving. He maintained ties to football as an investor and community figure, and several members of his family were also involved in the sport. He died of a heart attack at age 67 in 2014, leaving a lasting influence on how sporting goods were marketed and sold in Canada.
