Overview
James John Benzelock (born June 21, 1947) is a former professional ice hockey right winger who was selected fifth overall in the 1968 NHL Amateur Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. Although he did not play in the National Hockey League, Benzelock went on to play in the rival World Hockey Association (WHA), appearing in 166 WHA games for several clubs. He is remembered as a high draft pick whose professional path followed the opportunities of the early 1970s hockey landscape.
Professional career
Benzelock began his career in junior and minor-league hockey before being chosen in the first round of the 1968 NHL draft. After the founding of the WHA in 1972, many players found alternative routes to major-league play; Benzelock was among those who spent the primary portion of their top-level career in that league. He played as a forward at the right wing position, contributing in the roles typical for that spot on the ice.
Teams and appearances
Over his WHA tenure Benzelock played for multiple franchises, including:
- Alberta Oilers (an early form of the franchise that later became known as the Edmonton Oilers)
- Chicago Cougars
- Quebec Nordiques (a prominent WHA club that later joined the NHL)
In total he appeared in 166 World Hockey Association games. Contemporary press and statistical records note his movement between clubs at a time when the WHA was creating new opportunities and roster churn was common.
Context and legacy
The WHA operated from 1972 to 1979 as a major professional league competing with the NHL, attracting players with contracts and playing time that were often unavailable in the established league. Benzelock's career reflects that era: a player drafted high by an NHL team who ultimately made his mark in the WHA. While not a household name in NHL history, his story is part of the broader narrative of 1970s professional hockey and the shifting options available to players.
