Jean-Marie Lehn — French chemist and founder of supramolecular chemistry

French organic chemist Jean-Marie Lehn (born 1939) won the 1987 Nobel Prize for pioneering supramolecular chemistry, including work on host–guest systems and cryptands with applications across chemistry and materials science.

Jean-Marie Lehn (born 30 September 1939 in Rosheim) is a French chemist best known for founding the field of supramolecular chemistry. He shared the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Donald J. Cram and Charles J. Pedersen for discoveries concerning molecular recognition and the design of molecules that form selective, reversible associations.

Scientific contributions

Lehn's work extends traditional organic chemistry into the realm of non-covalent interactions between molecules. He introduced and developed concepts such as molecular recognition, self-assembly and information transfer at the molecular level. One of his notable achievements was the design of 'cryptands' — three-dimensional host molecules that bind specific guest species — which complement earlier crown ether chemistry.

Born and raised in the Alsace region, Lehn studied and built his research career in Strasbourg, creating a research school focused on supramolecular systems.
