Early life and education

Merz grew up in northeastern Switzerland and pursued higher studies at the University of St. Gallen (Hochschule St. Gallen). He completed advanced studies and research, earning academic qualifications including the doctorate degree known in some systems as Dr. rer. publ.. His training combined economics, management and public administration topics that later informed his public service.

Political career and federal service

Before joining the Federal Council, Merz was active in cantonal politics and in the private sector, bringing administrative and business experience to federal office. Elected to the Federal Council, he took charge of the Federal Department of Finance in 2004, becoming Switzerland’s principal finance minister and chief steward of the federal budget and fiscal policy.
