Guy Béhart-Hasson (16 July 1930 – 16 September 2015), known professionally as Guy Béart, was a French singer and songwriter whose work is commonly associated with the French chanson tradition. Over a career that stretched more than six decades he recorded in excess of 240 songs and released some 25 albums. His repertoire combined lyrical poetry, lyrical delivery and melodic arrangements that appealed to broad audiences in France and francophone countries.

Early life and background

Béart was born in Cairo in Egypt into a Jewish family. He spent part of his childhood in Lebanon before settling in Paris, where he developed his musical career and became involved in the cultural life of the city. These cross‑Mediterranean roots and an upbringing across several societies informed the sensibility of his songs and gave him a cosmopolitan perspective.

Musically, Béart is often described as belonging to the lineage of lyric-focused singer-songwriters who favored clear diction, direct storytelling and intimate accompaniment. His pieces range from gentle ballads to more rhythmically buoyant chansons, and they frequently explore themes of love, memory, human relationships and everyday observations. Instrumentation in his recordings commonly emphasized acoustic guitar and orchestral support typical of mid-20th century French popular music.

Career and legacy

Across decades Béart maintained a presence on record and stage, adapting to changing tastes while retaining a recognizable voice and poetic approach. He is remembered for the breadth of his catalog and for influencing subsequent generations of singers who value crafted lyrics and melodic clarity. His daughter, the actress Emmanuelle Béart (born 1963), is part of a public family presence that kept his name in broader cultural conversations.

Guy Béart died of a heart attack on 16 September 2015 in Garches, at the age of 85. He left behind a large body of recorded work and numerous songs that continue to be reinterpreted and performed by new artists.
