Overview
Guðmundur Þór Kárason (born 14 June 1974) is an Icelandic puppeteer, puppet designer and performer from Reykjavík. He is best known for his work on the children’s television series LazyTown, where he served as a puppet performer and provided the speaking voice for the character Ziggy. His career encompasses puppet construction, live performance, voice work and visual production for televised events.
Early career and studio work
In 2004 Guðmundur was among the founding team of LTS Garðbær Studios, often referred to as LazyTown Entertainment. The company was established to develop the LazyTown concept for international children's television; within that project Guðmundur combined roles as a builder and fabricator of puppet characters and as a studio performer. His practical knowledge of materials, mechanisms and character design has been applied to create durable, expressive puppets suited to television production.
Puppetry style and techniques
Guðmundur’s approach emphasizes clear silhouettes, expressive facial detail and movement tailored to a young audience. Puppetry for television requires synchronization with camera work and soundtrack; performers must coordinate timing, lip-sync and body language. As both designer and performer, Guðmundur worked closely with directors and other performers to ensure that visual design and performance supported storytelling and musical elements.
Work in broadcast events
Beyond children's television, Guðmundur has contributed to large-scale broadcast productions. He worked as a photographer for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and later took a lead creative role for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2011, producing and directing the postcard segments and developing on-screen graphics for the contest held in the Armenian capital Yerevan. These roles demonstrate a breadth of skills from visual storytelling to production design for live and recorded television.
Collaboration and production roles
Guðmundur’s work has required collaboration across departments: set designers, costume makers, directors, camera crews and sound engineers. In multi-disciplinary productions such as LazyTown and international song contests, the ability to translate a visual concept into practical elements for performance and broadcast is essential. His credits reflect participation in both creative and technical stages of production.
Legacy and significance
LazyTown became a globally distributed children's series that introduced Icelandic-produced content to international audiences. Contributors such as Guðmundur helped give life and personality to memorable puppet characters, and his move into event graphics and postcard production shows how skills developed in puppetry and design can be applied across media formats. His career illustrates a practical path from hands-on model-making to broader creative roles in televised events.
