Robert Gordon Wilson (16 April 1938 – 25 June 2017) was a Scottish solicitor and long-serving politician best known for leading the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 1979 to 1990. He represented Dundee East in the House of Commons between 1974 and 1987 and held the ceremonial office of Rector of the University of Dundee from 1983 to 1986. His career combined professional legal work with decades of public service and advocacy for constitutional change in Scotland.
Political career and leadership
Wilson became a prominent figure within the SNP during a turbulent period for Scottish politics. He took over party leadership following William Wolfe and guided the party through the 1980s, a decade that included debates over devolution, the Conservative central government, and the evolving shape of the independence movement. Under his leadership the SNP maintained its core objective of Scottish self-determination while adapting to the political realities of the time.
Parliamentary service and priorities
First elected to Parliament in 1974, Wilson served as Member of Parliament for Dundee East until 1987. In Westminster he was known for speaking on constitutional issues, social and economic concerns affecting Scottish constituencies, and for promoting greater powers for Scotland. His approach combined campaigning from the backbenches with efforts to build the party's profile across local communities.
Other roles and public life
Outside of Westminster, Wilson worked as a solicitor and engaged with civic institutions. He was elected Rector of the University of Dundee (1983–1986), a role in which he represented student interests and strengthened links between the university and broader Scottish public life. Colleagues remembered him for a steady, measured style and commitment to political debate conducted on constitutional and practical grounds.
Legacy and later years
After stepping down as SNP leader in 1990 — a role later assumed by Alex Salmond — Wilson remained a respected elder statesman within Scottish politics. He died in Edinburgh on 25 June 2017 after a short illness, leaving a record of sustained public service during a formative period for modern Scottish political life.
