Overview

Frank Watkins (February 19, 1968 – October 18, 2015) was an American bass guitarist who played a significant role in the heavy metal underground from the late 1980s through the 2010s. He is best known as the long-time bassist for the Florida death metal band Obituary and later as a member of the Norwegian black metal group Gorgoroth, where he performed under the stage name Bøddel. Watkins combined low, driving bass lines with a steady stage presence and also worked behind the scenes to support other musicians' careers.

Early life and musical beginnings

Watkins began playing music as a young adolescent, learning bass and developing an interest in heavier guitar-driven styles. He joined Obituary in 1989, contributing to the band's sound as death metal was coalescing into a distinct, internationally recognized genre. His playing emphasized tone and feel more than flashy technique, providing a foundation for the band’s riff-heavy arrangements.

Career with Obituary and Gorgoroth

With Obituary, Watkins participated in recordings and tours that helped define American death metal in the 1990s and beyond. Later in his career he moved into a different scene, joining the Norwegian black metal outfit Gorgoroth in December 2007. Adopting the stage name Bøddel for that project, he made his live debut with the band at a high-profile festival appearance. His transition from American death metal to European black metal highlights both his versatility as a musician and the cross-pollination between extreme metal subgenres.

Management work and other activities

Beyond performing, Watkins founded a small management and promotion company, Back From the Dead Productions. Through that venture he aimed to help underground and emerging bands navigate the music business, focusing on sustainable careers, touring logistics, and artist development. His involvement offstage reflected a practical understanding of the challenges musicians face in niche genres.

Illness, death, and legacy

In 2012 Watkins was diagnosed with primary central nervous system lymphoma, a serious form of cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord. He continued to be involved with music and community efforts as his health allowed, but he died from the disease on October 18, 2015. Colleagues and fans remembered him for his steady bass work, professionalism, and efforts to support other artists. His contributions are often cited in discussions of both American death metal history and the broader extreme metal community.
