Erna Solberg (born 24 February 1961 in Bergen) is a Norwegian politician who has led the Conservative Party (Høyre) since 2004 and served as the 35th Prime Minister of Norway (office) from 2013 until 2021. Her time in national politics spans decades as an elected member of the Storting and as a government minister. In the 2021 parliamentary election her party lost seats and a centre-left coalition under Jonas Gahr Støre took office.
Early life and education
Solberg was born and raised in Bergen and attended local schools before studying at the University of Bergen, where she took courses in sociology, political science and statistics. Her early involvement in youth politics and local party organisations paved the way for a national parliamentary career.
Political career and offices
Solberg was first elected to the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) in 1989 and built her profile through parliamentary work and party leadership roles. From 2001 to 2005 she served as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development in a centre-right coalition government. In 2004 she became leader of the Conservative Party and gradually positioned the party as Norway's main centre-right alternative.

Prime ministership (2013–2021)
As prime minister Solberg led centre-right coalition governments that combined the Conservative Party with other parties to form parliamentary majorities. Her administrations focused on economic management, welfare reform, education policy and infrastructure. The governments also navigated international challenges such as migration debates and commitments to climate goals. After being returned to office in 2017, her coalition later underwent changes; the 2021 election resulted in a shift to a centre-left government.
Political positions and reputation
Solberg is generally regarded as a pragmatic centre-right politician who supports market-oriented economic measures alongside preservation of the Norwegian welfare model. Commentators have sometimes described her leadership style as steady and disciplined; she has also been associated with a pragmatic approach to coalition politics and consensus-building in a multi-party system.
Personal life and notable facts
Born in Bergen, where she retains personal ties, Solberg is married to Sindre Finnes and they have two children. She has remained a prominent public figure in Norway and internationally, and continues to be referenced in discussions of Scandinavian politics and centre-right governance.
