Elio Toaff (30 April 1915 – 19 April 2015) was a prominent Italian rabbi best known for his long tenure as Chief Rabbi of Rome. Born in Livorno, he served as a communal and spiritual leader during the second half of the 20th century. His work combined pastoral care, education and public representation of Italy's Jewish population.
Early life and rabbinic career
After religious studies and early service in local communities, Toaff became a rabbi in Venice from 1947. In 1951 he succeeded to the office of Chief Rabbi of Rome, a position he held until 2002. During these decades he supervised religious institutions, schools and kosher services, and played a central role in restoring community life following the disruptions of World War II.
