Elisabeth Charlotte (Liselotte) of the Palatinate, Madame Palatine

Background and family

Born into the Palatine branch of the House of Wittelsbach, she carried the title Prinzessin Elisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz in German (Prinzessin Elisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz). She was raised in a Protestant princely household and entered the French royal orbit through marriage. Like many consorts of the period, she adapted to new languages and rituals; contemporaries noted both her persistence in German habits and her capacity to navigate the rituals of Versailles.
