Ejnar Hertzsprung (8 October 1873 – 21 October 1967) was a Danish scientist whose work connected chemical training with precise astronomical observation. Early career and methods

Hertzsprung combined careful photometry, parallax information and studies of proper motions to estimate absolute magnitudes for groups of stars. The Hertzsprung–Russell diagram

Between about 1911 and 1913 Hertzsprung's plots were recognized alongside Henry Norris Russell's independent work and together the results were organized into what is now called the Hertzsprung–Russell (H–R) diagram. The diagram displays the main sequence, distinguishes giant and dwarf stars and indicates the place of white dwarfs and evolved stars.
