Overview

Joseph Michael "Dusty" Hill (May 19, 1949 – July 28, 2021) was an American musician best known as the bassist and a vocalist of the rock band ZZ Top. Across decades he helped shape the group's blend of blues, rock and boogie, contributing a steady low end, baritone singing and an unmistakable stage persona.

Musical role and style

Hill performed primarily on electric bass and supplied backing and occasional lead vocals. His playing favored compact, groove-oriented lines that supported the band's guitar-led arrangements. The contrast between his baritone voice and Billy Gibbons' higher timbre became a defining element of ZZ Top's sound during studio recordings and live shows.

Career and development

Hill joined ZZ Top in the group's formative years and remained with the trio through its commercial peaks in the 1970s and 1980s and into the 21st century. The band's hit singles such as "La Grange," "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Gimme All Your Lovin'" brought widespread recognition and heavy rotation on music television, helping to popularize the group's image as much as its music.

Media appearances and public image

Beyond music, Hill made guest voice appearances on animated shows including King of the Hill and appeared in films such as Back to the Future Part III. On stage he was known for his long beard, sunglasses and hat—an iconic look shared with bandmate Billy Gibbons. The group's visual branding became closely associated with their sound and was a frequent topic in coverage of the band.

Personal life and death

Hill was born in Dallas, Texas, and attended Woodrow Wilson High School. He married Charleen McCrory in 2002. In July 2021 he suffered a hip injury; he later died in his sleep on July 28, 2021 in Houston at the age of 72. His passing prompted tributes from fans and fellow musicians worldwide.
