Drew Doughty (born December 8, 1989, in London, Ontario) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman best known for his long career with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. Selected second overall by the Kings in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Doughty established himself early as a high-minute, puck-moving defender who can be deployed in many situations.

Early life and junior career

Doughty developed in southern Ontario and rose through minor hockey before starring in the Ontario Hockey League. His junior play drew attention for the combination of skating, vision and poise with the puck, attributes that projected well to the professional level and contributed to his high draft position.

NHL career

Arriving in the NHL in 2008–09, Doughty made an immediate impact and was named to the league’s all-rookie team in his first season. Over subsequent seasons he became a cornerstone of the Kings' defence corps, trusted with matchup minutes on even strength, key power-play responsibilities and critical defensive zone deployments. A defining moment in his club career came when he helped the Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2012, a championship that solidified his status among the game’s top defensemen. He has also been recognized as an NHL All-Star on multiple occasions.

International play

Doughty has represented Canada at major international competitions. He was a member of Canada’s Olympic roster and earned a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. In addition to the Olympics, he has been selected for other international tournaments, where his blend of defensive responsibility and transition play proved valuable for national teams.

Playing style

Often characterized as a modern two-way blueliner, Doughty combines mobility, physicality and puck skills. He is noted for his ability to exit the defensive zone cleanly, join the rush when appropriate and neutralize top opposing forwards through positioning and gap control. Coaches have repeatedly relied on his stamina and consistency during long playoff runs and full regular seasons.
