Overview
Donald Thomas Regan (December 21, 1918 – June 10, 2003) was an American financier and Republican political appointee who held two senior posts in the administration of President Ronald Reagan. Regan moved from a long private-sector career into government, where he became a prominent advocate for the administration's economic agenda and later managed White House operations.
Career and roles
Before entering public service, Regan rose through the ranks of Wall Street and became a senior executive at a major brokerage firm, serving as its chairman and chief executive. In 1981 he was named Secretary of the Treasury, overseeing tax and fiscal policy during the early Reagan years. In 1985 he left Treasury to become White House Chief of Staff, a position in which he centralized staff operations and attempted to impose discipline on presidential scheduling and communications.
Policy influence and legacy
Regan played a key administrative role in implementing the policies known collectively as Reaganomics: tax reductions, deregulation, and an emphasis on economic growth. As Treasury Secretary he helped execute large tax cuts and worked with economic advisers on fiscal and monetary matters. His tenure is associated with both a period of economic change and with rising federal budget deficits that became a central topic of subsequent debate.
Controversies and later life
His time as chief of staff ended amid intense internal White House disagreements, including well-publicized tensions with the First Lady and other senior aides, leading to his resignation in 1987. After leaving Washington he published reflections on his service and returned to private life. Regan's career is often cited as an example of a senior business executive moving into top government office, and his experiences illustrate the challenges of managing policy, politics, and personnel in the executive branch.
