Overview
George "Doddie" Weir (4 July 1970 – 26 November 2022) was a Scottish rugby union player and public figure best known for his time as a lock for the Scotland national team. Born in Edinburgh, he combined physical presence on the field with a warm personality off it, becoming one of Scotland's most recognisable rugby internationals during the 1990s.
Playing career and characteristics
Weir played in the second row — the lock position — a role that requires height, strength and skill at the lineout and in tight play. Between 1990 and 2000 he made 61 international appearances for Scotland, establishing himself as a consistent and durable figure in the national squad. Teammates and commentators often highlighted his work rate, set-piece reliability and combative style, together with an approachable character that made him popular with supporters and the media.
MND diagnosis and advocacy
In June 2017 Weir publicly announced he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He chose to make the diagnosis public to help raise awareness and support for research and people living with the condition. Following the announcement he became a prominent advocate for patients and research into MND, using his profile to broaden public understanding and generate funds.
Foundation and public impact
Shortly after his diagnosis Weir helped establish a charitable initiative to support MND research and assist those affected by the disease. The effort brought together fans, former teammates and the wider rugby community to raise money and campaign for improved care and scientific study. His openness about living with a progressive neurological condition helped shift public conversations about MND and inspired many fundraising efforts across sport and beyond.
Legacy and recognition
Weir's legacy combines sporting achievement and lasting impact as a campaigner. He is remembered for his contribution to Scottish rugby, his character off the field and the momentum he created for MND research and patient support. Tributes after his death noted both his athletic achievements and the way he used personal adversity to benefit others.
