Career and writing

Norden first made his mark as a scriptwriter. As one half of the team often credited simply as Muir and Norden, he contributed material for radio and early television comedy, variety programmes and panel shows. Their work helped shape British light entertainment in the postwar decades, supplying scripts and sketches for popular performers and programmes of the era.

Broadcasting and notable programmes

Although he began as a writer, Norden became best known to the public as a broadcaster. He fronted several long-running programmes and specials, including:

  • My Word! – a radio panel game combining language puzzles and comic anecdotes.
  • My Music – a companion panel show mixing musical knowledge with humour.
  • It'll Be Alright on the Night – a television blooper and outtakes series that popularised the genre in the UK.
  • Looks Familiar and Laughter File – further shows that drew on television nostalgia and comedy clips.

He continued broadcasting for decades and became closely associated with the warm, conversational style of British panel entertainment. Norden officially retired from broadcasting in 2006.

Style, influence and honours

Norden's work was characterized by mild irony, polished wordplay and a respect for the traditions of light entertainment. His approach influenced subsequent generations of panel shows and clip-based television. For his services to broadcasting and entertainment he was awarded the CBE.

Personal life and legacy

Born in Mare Street, Hackney, London, on 6 February 1922, Norden was educated at the City of London School. He married Avril Rosen in 1943; the couple had two children and were married for many decades until her death in July 2018. Denis Norden died on 19 September 2018 at a hospital in Hampstead, London, aged 96. He is remembered for a long, popular career that bridged radio and television and for helping to define a congenial strand of British humour.
