Overview
David James "Mac" McAllister (born 12 January 1971) is a German politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He served as Minister-President of the Lower Saxony state government from July 2010 until 2013, after being elected to succeed Christian Wulff, who had resigned the state office following his election as President of Germany. Since 2014 McAllister has represented his party at the European level as a Member of the European Parliament.
Background and early life
McAllister is of mixed German and Scottish ancestry, a fact reflected in his familiar nickname "Mac". A trained lawyer by profession, he entered regional politics in Lower Saxony and rose through the ranks of the CDU's parliamentary group. His legal background has informed his work on institutional and administrative issues throughout his career.
Political career in Lower Saxony
Before becoming Minister-President, McAllister led the CDU parliamentary group in the Landtag of Lower Saxony (the state parliament) from 2003 to 2010 and served as chairman of the state CDU from 2008 until 2016. In 2010 he formed and headed a coalition government with the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), commonly referred to as the Cabinet McAllister. His tenure encompassed state-level responsibilities for economic policy, education, and administration, and included a seat on the supervisory board of Volkswagen from 2010 to 2013, reflecting the automaker's importance to the regional economy.
Key roles and later career
After losing the state election in 2013, when the Social Democrats returned to power under Stephan Weil, McAllister transitioned to European politics. In the European Parliament he sits with the centre-right political grouping and has concentrated on issues relating to the European Union's relations with partner countries and the workings of EU institutions. His move from regional executive office to the Parliament illustrates a career path taken by several prominent state politicians.
