Overview

David Michel (born 2 December 1975) is a French television producer best known for his work in animated children’s programming. He rose to prominence as a leading figure at Marathon Media, where he supervised and produced multiple internationally distributed series. Michel has been associated with commercially successful franchises and with strategies that emphasized global sales, multimedia tie-ins and partnerships with broadcasters and distributors.

Career and Marathon Media

Beginning in the late 1990s, Michel partnered with colleagues such as Vincent Chalvon-Demersay to develop long-running animated series. Since 1999 he produced several series noted for their action-comedy tone and appeal to pre-teen and teen audiences; these projects combined sharp character design, episodic adventure and accessible humor. Many of these productions were created for an international market and relied on co-production and distribution networks to reach viewers outside France. The collaborative nature of these efforts is often highlighted in accounts of his work at Marathon (collaborations since 1999).

Major works

Michel’s most recognizable titles include:

  • Totally Spies! — a spy-comedy series about three teenage girls balancing school and secret-agent missions.
  • Martin Mystery — an action-adventure show following a teen investigator of paranormal phenomena.
  • The Amazing Spiez! — a spin-off series featuring a family of young secret agents.

Beyond these flagship programs, Michel was involved in the development and international sale of other television properties (television series) that contributed to Marathon’s reputation for exportable French animation.

Film production and distribution

In 2009 Michel produced a feature-length adaptation, Totally Spies! The Movie, based on the television series. The film was a multinational production involving Marathon Media alongside partners including Studio 37—a production arm associated with the European telecommunications group Orange (Studio 37 / Orange)—and Mikado. Reported budgets and distribution plans reflected an intent to leverage the television franchise for theatrical and home-video markets; the series on which it was based had been shown in many countries around the world.

Later career and Cottonwood Media

Michel stepped down as CEO of Marathon in 2013 but remained active in production. In 2014 he founded Cottonwood Media, a company focused on developing and producing children’s animated content for international audiences. As president, he has pursued co-production agreements and projects designed to reach broadcasters and streaming platforms across regions, continuing his emphasis on global reach and brand-building.
