David Joshua Azrieli (Hebrew: דוד עזריאלי) was a Polish-born developer, designer and philanthropist who became a major figure in real estate in Canada and Israel. Over several decades he built a business known for large-scale retail, office and mixed-use projects and for combining commercial development with attention to architectural form.

Early life and emigration

Azrieli was born in what is now Poland in 1922. Like many of his generation he experienced the upheavals of mid-20th century Europe and later emigrated, ultimately establishing professional and family ties in both Canada and Israel. Although primarily known as a developer and businessman, Azrieli took an active interest in design and is often described in public accounts as a designer and an informal architect. In Israel his best-known contribution is a prominent multi-tower complex whose geometric silhouettes became a city landmark; in Canada his company developed major retail properties and office buildings in several urban centres.

At the height of his public profile his wealth was reported by financial media: in 2013 his net worth was estimated at about US$3.1 billion and publications such as Forbes listed him among the wealthiest individuals in Canada and internationally. He died on July 9, 2014, in Montreal, in the province of Quebec, at the age of 92.
