Dan Haggerty (November 19, 1941 – January 15, 2016) was an American actor and animal trainer widely recognized for his portrayal of the wilderness icon Grizzly Adams. Over a career that blended performance, stunt work and animal handling, Haggerty moved between feature films, television and live appearances. For basic career listings and credits see further filmography resources.
Early work and animal training
Before his breakout as a leading actor, Haggerty earned a reputation behind the scenes as a skilled animal handler and stunt performer. He worked with animals on location for motion pictures and television, including serving as an animal handler on Tarzan productions. Those responsibilities required close training, trust-building with animals and on-set safety work that informed his later screen persona as a man at ease in the outdoors and around wildlife; one such credit was for a Tarzan project referenced here.
Grizzly Adams: film and television
Haggerty first reached a wide audience with the 1974 feature The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, a film about a mountain man who befriends wild animals. He reprised the role in the television movie sequel The Capture of Grizzly Adams and then starred in an NBC series titled "Grizzly Adams" that aired from 1977 to 1978 (series details). The gentle, outdoors-oriented character became a cultural touchstone of 1970s family entertainment and is the role most associated with Haggerty's public image.
Film appearances and notable roles
Alongside his Grizzly Adams work, Haggerty appeared in a range of films spanning drama, comedy and road movie genres. Early screen appearances included the landmark counterculture film Easy Rider. He also appeared in lighter fare such as the outlaw biker comedy Pink Angels and other genre pictures credited in various listings (selected credits). His background in stunts and animal handling allowed him to take on roles that required physicality and a comfort with animals on camera.
Awards, recognition and later years
Haggerty received several honors that reflected both his popular appeal and community involvement. Among these were a star on Hollywood Boulevard in 1994 and recognition from family-oriented organizations for the wide distribution of Grizzly Adams videos. He was named Harley-Davidson "Humanitarian of the Year" in 1986 (Harley-Davidson recognition) and won a People's Choice Award for popularity in 1980. He also received a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International and was honored with a star in Kanab, Utah, an area long associated with Western filmmaking.
Dan Haggerty died on January 15, 2016, in Burbank, California, after a battle with spinal cancer. His portrayal of Grizzly Adams remains a defining example of a television-era folk hero who combined compassion for animals with a rugged, solitary persona.
