Christina Alexandra "Chrystia" Freeland (born August 2, 1968, in Peace River, Alberta) is a Canadian politician who sits with the Liberal Party of Canada.
Political roles
Freeland has been a member of parliament since 2013. Over her parliamentary career she has held several senior cabinet posts:
- Minister of International Trade (2015–2017)
- Minister of Foreign Affairs (2017–2019)
- Deputy Prime Minister (appointed 2019) and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs (2019–2020)
- Minister of Finance (from 2020 onward)
Background and career before politics
Before entering electoral politics, Freeland worked as a journalist and foreign correspondent. She is the author of several non-fiction books, including works that examine global economics and political change.
She remains a prominent figure in the federal government, combining senior ministerial responsibilities with her role as deputy prime minister.
