Certificat de formation à la sécurité (CFS)

Scope and purpose

The primary aim of the CFS is to ensure that crew members can prevent and respond to in-flight and ground emergencies, protect passengers, and apply basic medical assistance when necessary. It is a prerequisite for employment as a flight attendant in France and complements airline-specific operating procedures and on-the-job training (flight attendant).

Structure and typical subjects

• Theoretical instruction: principles of aircraft safety, emergency equipment, evacuation procedures, fire and smoke behavior, human factors and communication, and regulations.
• Practical training: demonstrations and hands-on practice such as simulated evacuations, use of fire extinguishers, donning life vests and oxygen equipment, and survival or ditching drills when appropriate.
• First aid and medical response: basic life support, management of common in-flight medical events, and coordination with medical services.

Training content is designed to combine regulatory requirements with realistic scenario-based exercises to build both knowledge and practical skills (safety protocols).

Assessment, certification and revalidation

Candidates must pass written and practical assessments to obtain the certificate. Successful completion demonstrates competence in emergency procedures and first aid. Regulations require continuing professional training and periodic refreshers so that skills and knowledge remain current; airlines and national rules specify the exact frequency and conditions for revalidation (first aid guidance).

Although the CFS is specific to France as a national degree, its content and objectives reflect broader European and international standards for cabin safety. Similar qualifications exist in other countries; however, employment and legal recognition depend on the issuing state and the operator's regulatory framework. The CFS remains a central element of passenger safety and crew preparedness in French civil aviation.
