Early political career and offices

Nelson began his public service in the Florida House of Representatives from 1972 until 1978, then moved to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1979 through 1991. He stepped away from Congress in 1990 to pursue the Democratic nomination for governor of Florida, a primary won by Lawton Chiles. Spaceflight and connection to NASA

In January 1986 Nelson became the second sitting member of the U.S. Congress to fly in space, following Senator Jake Garn. He flew as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, a mission that reinforced his long-standing interest in space policy and helped raise his profile on aerospace matters. That flight linked his legislative work with firsthand experience of human spaceflight and research operations.

As Administrator, his responsibilities include overseeing civilian space programs, scientific research (including climate studies), human exploration initiatives such as the Artemis program, and partnerships with commercial space companies and international agencies.
