Anna Bligh

Early life and rise in politics

Bligh grew up in Queensland and entered public life through community and political work. She was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the mid-1990s and represented an inner-city electorate until her retirement from state politics in 2012. During her time in parliament she held a number of senior ministerial portfolios and served as Deputy Premier before being chosen to lead the government.

As premier, Bligh led a government focused on public services, infrastructure and social programs. Her leadership became particularly prominent during the 2010–2011 period when Queensland experienced widespread flooding and other natural disasters.
