Participants and disability categories

Competitors at Arnhem included athletes with a range of impairments. The principal categories were spinal cord injury, amputation, visual impairment (blindness), cerebral palsy and the classification known as "Les Autres" — a French term meaning "the others" used to group athletes with physical conditions not covered by the other categories (for example certain muscular and neurological disorders). Classifications governed which events an athlete could enter and aimed to create fair competition among people with comparable functional abilities.

Sports and events

The programme featured a variety of adapted sports, with track and field (athletics) and swimming among the largest disciplines. Other contested sports typically included wheelchair basketball, archery, table tennis, weightlifting and wheelchair fencing, as well as team and precision events adapted for different impairment types.
