Local settlements mix urbanized town areas with smaller villages and agricultural land.
History
The town is best known for the medieval Zvečan Fortress, perched above the settlement. Zvečan was first attested in written sources during the late 11th century, in accounts describing border tensions between the medieval Serbian state and the Byzantine Empire around 1091–1094. Over subsequent centuries the area passed through Ottoman rule and other regional administrations, leaving archaeological and architectural traces.
Economy and culture
Historically, the local economy linked to agriculture and the nearby mining and industrial complex around Kosovska Mitrovica, including the well-known Trepča mines. Cultural life centers on Orthodox religious sites, traditional festivals and the fortress, which attracts visitors interested in medieval history and landscape views.
Contemporary administration and significance
