Geography and urban character

The city occupies a coastal plain with direct access to maritime routes and major overland corridors. İzmit’s urban area includes residential neighborhoods, port facilities and heavy industry along the waterfront, while surrounding districts combine smaller towns, industrial parks and green belts.

History

In antiquity the site was known as Nicomedia, founded by King Nicomedes I of Bithynia and later serving as an important Roman and Byzantine center. Over the centuries it was absorbed into the Ottoman realm and developed into a modern industrial town in the 19th and 20th centuries as railways, ports and factories expanded.

Economy and transport

İzmit is a major industrial hub with concentrated activity in shipbuilding, petrochemicals, steel, automotive components and logistics. Key assets include deep-water port terminals, highway and rail links toward Istanbul and Ankara, and proximity to major bridges and industrial zones.

Notable events and recovery

The city is widely known as the epicenter of the 1999 İzmit earthquake, which caused severe destruction and led to large-scale reconstruction and improvements in building codes, emergency planning and urban renewal in the following decades.
