Overview
Ziebach County is a rural county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is characterized by wide plains, ranchland and small population centers. The county seat and principal administrative town is Dupree. Historically and today the area is remote compared with more urban parts of the state, and it attracts attention for its low population density and open landscapes.
Geography and land use
Ziebach County covers a large area of prairie and mixed-grass country used mainly for livestock grazing and some dryland farming. Travel is predominantly by rural highways and county roads; public services and commercial centers are limited and concentrated in a few settlements. The county also overlaps reservation lands and features riparian corridors and seasonal streams rather than large rivers or lakes.
People and culture
The county has a small population compared with most counties in the United States. As recorded in the 2000 census, the population was 2,519 residents. A substantial share of the population identifies as Native American and tribal culture has an important role in community life, local governance, and social services. Small towns and unincorporated communities provide schools, churches and local businesses that serve widely dispersed residents.
History and name
Ziebach County was created in 1911 during a period of administrative reorganization in South Dakota. It is commonly reported to be named for Frank M. Ziebach, a noted figure from the era of the Dakota Territory, who was active in territorial politics and journalism. Settlement and formal organization proceeded slowly because of the region's arid climate and the seasonal nature of ranching.
Government, economy and services
The county government is centered in Dupree and provides basic services such as public records, law enforcement, road maintenance and local courts. The local economy is dominated by ranching and agriculture, tribal employment, and public services; tourism is limited but some visitors come for hunting, open-country recreation, and cultural events.
