Overview
Yellow Medicine County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It takes its name from the Yellow Medicine River, a local waterway whose English name reflects a Dakota phrase for a yellow-colored medicinal plant found in the area. As of the 2010 census the county population was 10,438. The county seat is Granite Falls, which serves as the principal governmental and service center for the surrounding rural communities.
Geography and landscape
Located in southwestern Minnesota, the county includes river valleys and rolling prairie largely used for agriculture. The Minnesota River and the Yellow Medicine River are among the region's notable waterways, shaping local soils and wildlife habitat. Land use is dominated by cropland, pasture, wetlands and small woodlots that provide seasonal habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.
History and name
The name of the county derives from the Yellow Medicine River; early European-American settlers adopted the translated Dakota term that referenced a plant used for traditional remedies. The area was opened to settlement in the 19th century and developed along river corridors and rail lines, with towns growing as local trade and service centers for farmers.
Communities and economy
The county contains several small cities and numerous townships. In addition to Granite Falls, other population centers provide schools, markets and municipal services. Agriculture—principally row crops such as corn and soybeans, plus livestock—is the leading economic activity, complemented by local manufacturing, retail and public services that support residents.
Recreation and notable facts
Outdoor recreation is popular: fishing, hunting, river boating and seasonal festivals are typical attractions. Local historical societies and community museums preserve the county's pioneer and Native American heritage.
