Overview
Yehezkel Braun was a German-born Israeli composer whose career spanned much of the 20th century and into the early 21st. He is known for contributions to choral, chamber, orchestral and liturgical music and for bridging Jewish musical traditions with contemporary classical practice. His Hebrew name is recorded in sources as יחזקאל בראון.
Life and education
Braun was born in Breslau, Germany (Breslau, now Wroclaw) in 1922 and emigrated with his family to Mandate Palestine when he was two years old, settling in the cultural milieu that produced Israel's early art-music scene (Mandate Palestine). He studied at the Israel Academy of Music (Israel Academy of Music) and later earned a master’s degree in Classical Studies from Tel Aviv University, where he eventually became Professor Emeritus.
Musical style and works
Braun’s music is often described as combining Western classical forms with elements drawn from Jewish liturgical melodies, folk material and Middle Eastern modal colors. He wrote in many genres, including sacred music for synagogue use, choral cycles, pieces for small ensembles and works performed by orchestras and choirs across Israel and abroad. Performers and reviewers have noted his clarity of texture, modal inflections and respect for vocal writing.
Teaching and influence
As a long-time faculty member at Tel Aviv University Braun influenced generations of Israeli musicians through composition classes, seminars and public lectures. His role as an educator helped professionalize composition study in Israel and supported the emergence of an active contemporary-music community.
Recognition and legacy
Braun received national recognition for his body of work, most notably the Israel Prize for music in 2001. His compositions remain part of the repertoire of choirs and ensembles that focus on Israeli and Jewish music, and recordings and performances continue to introduce his music to new audiences. He is remembered as a figure who helped articulate a modern Israeli musical voice.
Yehezkel Braun died in Tel Aviv on August 27, 2014 (Tel Aviv), at the age of 92. Summary resources and further biographical notes are available in music reference entries and institutional histories of Israeli music (Israeli composer surveys).
